These rock islands were named "The Three Sisters" by the local Arakwal people as part of a cautionary tale about three sisters drowning and being turned to stone.
Being nearby to Cape Byron, Broken Head is very nearly the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. So standing here at sunrise always feels a bit special as you are being treated to Australia's first light for the new day.
Easter is a fantastic time to visit the Byron Bay area. The local Byron Bay Bluesfest is on, the weather's warmer than down south and there's just the right amount of storm activity to make things interesting. Plenty of broken cloud and often a mixture of both low and high clouds.
On this particular morning I started out from my accommodation at the Broken Head Holiday Park to capture the beginning of the new day. After a short 10 minute walk, accompanied by all sorts of things rustling around the bush in the darkness, I emerged onto the headland that overlooks The Three Sisters.
I was treated to some fantastic blue hour light. But things were only getting better and as it changed to golden hour I captured the sun popping over the rocks but not yet disappearing into the cloud above.
